Anyways, this night wasn't about me talking, so accordingly, I'll be posting here about blurbs that each of the groups have written out for me. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask them all for these, so this list will not be originally complete. Check back later as I hear back from them with more blurbs.
Churches
Lake Avenue Church and Community Foundation
Contact: Pastor Jeff Liou, jeffl@lakeave.org
Right on the corner of Lake Avenue and the 210 freeway, LAC is a highly diverse church. Don't let our size fool you. We encourage participation in our smaller communities. Since you already have college-age fellowship at CCF, consider joining one of the intergenerational groups, or serving in other kinds of ministry (e.g. children, students, disability, homeless, prison ministry). We also have a church-based college ministry which focuses on worship, teaching, service to the church body, and equipping for faithfulness in the world.
The Lake Avenue Community Foundation serves families of northwest Pasadena. Probably the main feature of this work is the STARS tutoring and mentoring program. If you have an hour per week, you can tutor elementary, junior high, or high school students. If you'd like to go deeper, consider becoming a one-on-one mentor to a student. How wonderful would it be to help make a students dream of attending college, a reality that you already enjoy.

Faith Community Church
Contact: Professor John Dabiri*, jodabiri@its.caltech.edu
I have been attending Faith Community Church in West Covina since I was a first-year grad student here at Caltech. Their mission is to "creatively nurture Christians to love God and to share his love". They accomplish that mission by encouraging the church to become involved in ministries offered by the church and in the local community. As a grad student I was involved in their high school ministry, and I found it to be a great change of pace from academic life at Tech. The senior pastor, Dr. Jim Reeve, earned his doctorate at Fuller Seminar; and another pastor, Dr. Stephan Ichicriu, earned his Ph.D. in physics here at Caltech. So, it's diverse church with a heart for Christ, and I'd be happy to talk more about it anytime.
Newman Center
Contacts: Paul Nguyen, pnugyen@caltech.edu; Karen Dowling, poloshorty5009@gmail.com
We offer mass once a week on Campus with Chaplain Fr. Dean Stassell, sometimes with lunch or snacks afterwards. Right now mass is at 10:45 AM at Winnett Student Center. We are also hosting the Culture of Christ apologetics course on Wednesdays 8-9 pm in 107 Annenberg.
The Caltech Newman Center is an organization for sharing the Catholic faith and supporting the Catholics of the Caltech community. In addition to weekly Mass, we host other activities such as Bible studies, guest speaker talks, prayer meetings, service projects, fun nights, and cookouts. We have a chaplain who celebrates Mass and is available to hear confessions and for spiritual guidance. The Newman Center is not just for Catholics. Anyone who is interested is more than welcome to join the email list and attend our events.

Outdoor Classroom
Contact: Steve Morgan, Steve@TheOutdoorClassroom.org
The Outdoor Classroom is a Christ centered ministry to kids in urban neighborhoods seeking to "Introduce Kids To Their Creator Through Creation". We involve elementary age kids in growing vegetables, herbs and flowers in one of our Pasadena Community Gardens and meet each Tuesday afternoon from 4-5PM. We are open to new adult volunteers who would like to come weekly and also adults and/or students who would like to come on a one time basis and give a talk or demonstration on some aspect of science in the outdoors.
Skid Row
Contact: Peter Buhler, bpeter@caltech.edu
Skid Row is an area of several square blocks in Los Angeles in which there is a large homeless community. Skid Row Ministries is a program on Sunday mornings that provides ministry to the homeless who live there. It is run through Christian Assembly, in Eagle Rock. At 8 AM we begin with prayer at Christian Assembly (sometimes there are rides from Caltech, otherwise the first bus of the morning can take you there). Then, at around 8:30, we head over to 6th Street and Gladys (in the middle of Skid Row) to set up a food table and begin distributing bagged lunches (there are rides from Christian Assembly to Skid Row) for the next ~2 hours. The point of Skid Row Ministries is not just to hand out food; the food serves as a mechanism to introduce yourself and engage in conversations with the homeless in order to create a meaningful and lasting friendship with these people. There are many beautiful people there who are looking for friendship; it is an experience that has changed my life forever, so I highly suggest trying it out.
Caltech Y
Contact: Greg Fletcher, gregf@caltech.edu
The Caltech Y exists to enrich student life and to provide opportunities that will challenge students to become engaged responsible citizens of the world. Programs include Outdoor Adventures, Social Activities, Cultural Events, and the Activism, Leadership and Community Service highlighted below.
There are many opportunities for community service through the Caltech Y. There are ongoing projects (RISE tutoring Pasadena middle and high school students a couple hours a week on campus) and a variety of one day projects (serving meals at a homeless shelter, tutoring kids at a Salvadorian community center in LA, and Make-A-Difference Day); we even have multi day trips (Alternative Spring Break). The Y also offers resources and advising for those looking to set up an individual or group project with an area service agency.
The Caltech Y also has a long history of responding to student issues on campus and global concerns in our community with thought provoking forums for engaging with the world. Some of the most recognized efforts have been those bringing distinguished speakers, such as Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu to campus as the Social Activism Speaker Series now does. The Y has developed a series of lunch talks on science and policy this year to compliment our annual Washington DC Science Policy Trip in encouraging students to expand their circle of influence in the world.
The Y has long advocated for student engagement. To learn more about opportunities attend our annual Community Service and Advocacy Fair – Thursday, Nov. 10, self subscribe to the Y-Act email interest list through our website, or visit the Caltech Y in person.

*Professor Dabiri got a phone call during the meeting that his father was in a car accident. Fortunately, his injuries are not life threatening, but we should still keep him in our prayers.
