(click "read more" to read everything!)
Procedure: Testimony, then vote, then next testimony, etc.
All positions are council positions, but the “essential
council” is President, Secretary, and Large Group coordinator and to some
extent event coordinator. Other positions are available to be taken but not
essential.
President
-
Robb is nominated
-
Superchicken. Gets a T-shirt (but has to give it
away to the next president)
-
Spiritual attacks on the fellowship go through
the president.
-
Robb says
o
He wants to be on council, but says he wouldn’t
be very good at a job like secretary which requires some organization and
administrative responsibility.
o
The President gets to think about the
overarching issues and the direction of the fellowship
o
Robb has already set the CCF precedent.
o
He cares about the job and feels that it’s worth
doing.
o
This past year as president, Robb did a lot of
lawsuit stuff. He’s happy to be beyond that in order to focus on other aspects
of the fellowship.
o
Before last year’s FBM, when Robb was about to
become president for the first time, he felt some of the spiritual attacks
mentioned above.
o
Future. Robb wants to focus on:
§
Inviting people to CCF events.
§
Meeting with council members one-on-one.
§
Supporting the rest of council.
§
Setting aside time to pray for CCF and Caltech
§
Thinking hard about what the fellowship needs
and how to bring that about.
§
Not getting bogged down with schoolwork so that
nothing happens with CCF.
o
Question for Robb: Do you have any particular
spiritual gifts?
§
According to feedback from others, a presence of
peace. Being able to bring peace to situations by being there.
o
Question for Robb: Are you currently in a
discipleship?
§
With Tim. Not clear who is the disciple and who
the disciple.
§
Hopes to be in a discipleship with Peter.
o
Give Robb feedback whenever you have some.
-
Robb is now the CCF president.
-
Traditional to pond the new president. Hasn’t
been done in the past couple of years. We should do it.
Large group
coordinator
-
Peter and Andy nominated, with Andy nominated as
co-coordinator
-
Peter says
o
23, alum, coming back for grad school in the
fall
o
Became really committed to Christian walk as a
smore after reading the bible through as a frosh.
o
Member of Hill Community Church
o
In discipleships with Luke and Stephen
o
Plans to meet regularly with Skippy
o
Plan for LG
§
Goals
·
Reintegrate grad students
o
They make good discipleship partners for
undergrads
·
Emphasize discipleships, community building,
loving each other as Christians
·
Ministry to campus, reaching out
o
Once our core community has been
well-established
·
Have LG serve as good structural support for
small groups
§
Will start in July or August to make a baseline
to work from
§
Concurrently in late summer good to know what
new frosh we have so we can stalk them
§
Personally invite new frosh to LG and others
§
Structure of LG
·
Aiming for 5 hours of prep per week
o
Reading a book every week is too much!
·
Worship for first 30 mins, then 1-2 minute
prayer
·
Leader introduces passage for 10 mins
·
Break into discussions in smaller groups for 20
mins
o
Groups will be designed to mix people, not keep
people among their close friends all the time
·
Get back into big group for final messages
·
Keep LG to 1 hour after worship
·
Snacks, etc. after closing in prayer
o
Question for Peter: What plans do you have to
invite outside speakers to LG?
§
LG is flexible. Peter’s plan is what will work
best for him. No specific plan for inviting outside speakers, but will talk
with Sam and Tim about this since they have invited people.
§
Pastor Nathan is cool and people have enjoyed
him coming.
§
1-2 invited speakers/term.
§
Luke and Skippy are perennially invited
speakers.
o
Peter will shave his beard so he doesn’t look
too scary.
-
Andy says
o
His level of involvement will depend on how
demanding his schoolwork is.
§
He expects next year to be less rough than this year.
o
He likes Peter’s plan for LG.
o
Has gotten into apologetics recently
§
Something he might be willing to talk about at
LG, especially as we get to the outreach part of Peter’s plan.
§
Apologetics can be helpful for evangelizing and solidifying
one’s own stance.
o
Outreach
§
Not Andy’s strong point.
§
Would be a learning experience for him.
o
Fine with presenting or finding speakers.
o
Spiritual gift: procrastination! :P
§
Tim says: spiritual gifts are not necessarily
things you’re good at, but rather things you care about.
o
Is fine with attending council meetings and
generally being a part of council.
o
Question for Andy: Do you feel obligated to or
do you want to or where on this continuum do you lie?
§
He knows he can refuse, so it’s really more that
he wants to.
o
Suggestion: Andy and Peter meet up weekly.
o
Peter is happy with all the help he can get!
-
We voted and now Peter is the new LG coordinator
with Andy in a supportive role.
Secretary
-
Grace says
o
On the I-have-to vs. I-want-to spectrum, Grace
is very much on the I-have-to part.
o
She feels that most people don’t enjoy note
taking, but she does.
o
She cares about us and wants to contribute in a
way that is not a huge burden for her but still helps the fellowship.
o
The Head UCC position is very burdensome for
her. She’s an introvert and the job assumes she likes talking to people.
§
The Area Coordinator wants her to stay with this
position but is willing to help her out a bunch.
§
There’s no one else to take the position so she
feels like she has to do this too.
§
The rest
of us need to support Grace in this role.
o
Grace is afraid there will be no secretary
without her.
o
The basic responsibilities of secretary aren’t
that much.
§
Grace has been able to attend council meetings
this year so she feels she can do that next year too.
o
Grace is in a discipleship with Jessica Hsu and
talks with Vivian a lot too.
o
Grace will have some time to think about things
this summer.
-
We voted and Grace is the new secretary.
Event accomplisher
and retreat coordinator
-
Eliza says
o
She’s excited about event accomplisher and
thinks she has to take the retreat coordinator position because no one else is
nominated.
o
Peter says he’ll have a car next year so he and
Vivian can help buy food and stuff
o
There is concern about the stress burden on
Eliza given how blue slip milkshakes has gone this past year.
§
Retreats can be scheduled far in advance which
helps to relieve some of the stress.
§
Blue slip milkshakes
·
Running it has improved with experience
o
Peter was thinking it’s good to set all dates
for events at the beginning of the year.
§
Eliza agrees that that will help her a lot and
make things easier in general.
-
We voted and Eliza is the new event accomplisher
and retreat coordinator
Small group coordinator
and discipleship coordinator
-
Jessica says
o
Small group coordinator
§
She’s really enjoyed Avery small group this
year. It’s kept up large attendance.
§
Wants to reach out through small groups to
invite people to CCF events.
o
Discipleship coordinator
§
Not sure what the position includes right now,
but is willing to take on that job.
o
Question: Both jobs involve a lot of talking to
people and emailing people.
§
Jessica likes emailing people, but talking to
people is a bit more difficult for her.
§
Talking is important though.
o
Question: How does your workload look next year?
§
Core, ACM 95, orgo and Chinese
o
Are you in a discipleship?
§
Meets with Lisa and Audrey at 7:30 every
morning, which is kind of like a discipleship.
§
Vivian and Jessica plan to meet more.
o
Favorite food?
§
Chocolate
-
We voted. Jessica is the new small group
coordinator and discipleship coordinator.
Dig-in dude
-
Vivian says
o
Given her schedule she hasn’t been able to
attend small groups regularly.
o
Dig-ins are important to her.
o
Something she can reasonably commit to next
year.
o
Has enjoyed preparing dig-ins with Grace this
past year.
o
Likes discussing scripture.
o
Question: Do you have the time for it?
§
She definitely wants to be on council.
§
This is something important to her and allows
her to be a part of council.
§
She will make time for it.
o
Question: anything you would change about
dig-ins?
§
She likes the format this past term the best.
Less formal, less prepared, more discussion and free form.
§
More discussion is better.
o
Question: are you willing to be buried in sand
on preterm retreat?
§
Yes, if someone emails her beforehand. J
-
We voted. Vivian is the new dig in dude.
Frosh prayer
coordinator
-
Alex and Lisa nominated
o
People who want to see frosh prayer continue
happening can make it happen. Does not need to be one person being at frosh
prayer every weekday. Involves a lot of delegation.
-
People have regularly showed up this year which
is good.
-
As frosh prayer coordinator Vivian talked with
Jessica and Lisa about it to make it happen.
-
Alex says
o
He enjoyed frosh prayer this past year.
§
Helps to distress.
§
Talking with other people.
o
He thought an extended period of prayer would be
a cool thing. Like a few hours plus.
§
Anyone in CCF could be involved. Around the
clock praying, tag-team style.
o
Frosh prayer is what brought him to CCF.
o
He still wants to go to frosh prayer besides
just coordinating it.
-
Renaming
frosh prayer to pond prayer is something to consider.
-
Having a discipleship pair lead for a specific
date is a good idea. Pairs in general are a good idea.
-
Lisa is at a graduation right now but she wants
to be involved.
-
We voted and Alex and Lisa are the new frosh
prayer coordinators.
Wisdom for new council:
-
As a reminder to the frosh and everyone else,
remember that you can change things.
If you want to change something, ask upperclassmen why it is the way it is and
incorporate those reasons into your decision to change.
-
It’s ok to disagree.
-
Mandate from scripture is to listen to your brother, not necessarily
agree.
-
If you have some free time, schedule a social
thing! Help build community. Jonathan offers board games and will be working at
Caltech 20 hours a week this summer. He will have a lot of free time. Remember
to do life together.
Grace will send out
an email reminding old council and new council that we’re all meeting at 1PM
this Friday.
A bit of an agenda for the new council meeting:
-
Diversifying names
-
Move LG?
o
There are some conflicts with Monday nights.
Tuesday might be better.
§
It used to be that no classes happened on Monday
nights and glee club met from 8 to 9, so LG started at 9:15.
·
Clearly none of this is true anymore. Glee clubs
meet from 7 to like 11 so a conflict is unavoidable.
-
Preterm retreat
-
What to do over the summer
-
Vision casting
